The Mug That Holds More Than a Drink

Some photos are taken in a hurry — because the moment won't wait. This one was. Spotted in Alexandria, St. Ann, a Jamaican Woodpecker paused just long enough to be captured. Noisy, bold, and unmistakably Jamaican, he had no idea he was about to become part of something lasting.

The photo is over 20 years old. It was taken to show a three-year-old toddler son something wonderful — "Look, that's a Jamaican Woodpecker." That little boy grew up. The bird lives on, now wrapped around this enamel mug for the world to hold.

In Jamaica, we don't really camp — but we know the feeling of a metal mug. It's the mug from Grandma's kitchen in the country. The one that came out on rainy nights in St. Ann, filled with hot chocolate or warm milk, while the zinc roof sang and the hills disappeared into mist.
